In Western culture some believe it began with the Last Supper — the famous dinner where Jesus was betrayed. There were 13 people at the table & the 13th guest was Judas who later betrayed Jesus. Since then 13 has been linked to bad luck by many Christians.
In Norse mythology here / there has a similar story. The god Loki was the 13th guest at a feast & his arrival brought disruption & death. These stories may have created fear around the number primary in the West.

In numerology which is closely related to astrology 13 is a powerful number. It combines 1 (new beginnings) & 3 (creativity & joy). Together 1 + 3 = 4 which stands for stability & first brick. So while 13 might seem strange it actually holds a lot of meaning.
